Common Questions From New Riders

How Much Does Maintenance Cost?

While you may be expecting to pay more for your gas this summer, owning a motorcycle comes with some additional costs beyond simply filling it up. Just like regular cars, motorcycles will need to be maintained regularly. Motorcycle tires range from $350 to more than $600 for a set, and you may have change them every 3,000 miles or so, depending on the terrain you ride on. When you add in regular oil changes, chains, belt drive replacements, and anything else that might need to be serviced, you can expect to pay at least $1,000 each year for maintenance.

Which Equipment is Absolutely Necessary?

As we noted in our previous post, helmets are a must-have for riders of any experience level. A good jacket will help you stay protected from the wind (and keep you looking great!). Even though the weather is beginning to warm up, riding in the evenings and mornings can be particularly cold when you consider that you have little to no protection from the wind as you ride. Unlike traditional coats, motorcycle jackets are designed to stay insulated and warm in extremely windy conditions. A good jacket also acts as a barrier between your skin and the street in the event of an accident, so make sure that you choose something you’re comfortable wearing whenever you hit the road!

Another piece of gear that you should be wearing whenever you ride is a good pair of motorcycle pants. Leather pants aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but jeans offer almost no protection in the event of an accident. Many of the motorcycle pants on today’s market are made with Kevlar padding, which makes them almost like a helmet for your lower body. Many designs are available in styles that are almost indistinguishable from regular pants, making them an ideal choice for those who plan on riding their bikes into work.

While many riders will debate their necessity, it’s important to have a good pair of motorcycle gloves in your closet. In addition to looking great, motorcycle gloves will protect your hands from becoming cold and numb as you ride.
