Even More Tips for Riding Safely

Choose the Right Bike

Today’s motorcycles have more power and speed than the motorcycles of the past, so it’s important to choose wisely when you’re purchasing a new bike. If you’re brand new to riding, or if you’ve taken a long break from riding, then you should steer clear of high-performance bikes built for more experienced riders. Start with a small bike that you’ll feel in control of — you can always upgrade your bike later.

After you’ve chosen your ideal bike, you’ll want to make sure that your tires are perfect for your needs. Thinner tires don’t provide the traction and handling that wider ones do, so consider investing in a set of custom motorcycle wheels for optimal performance.

Invest in Anti-Lock Brakes

Anti-lock brakes are one of the more important components your bike should have. In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has estimated that bikes equipped with anti-lock brakes are about 37 percent less likely to be involved in fatal accidents than bikes without them. In order to understand how anti-lock brakes work, it’s helpful to understand what happens without them. Drivers who brake without anti-lock brakes are left with almost no steering power, making it nearly impossible to avoid other drivers and obstacles in the road. Anti-lock brakes, however, prevent your bike’s wheels from locking up and provide you with the control you need to stay safe.

Practice, Practice, Practice

There’s no getting around the fact that riding a motorcycle is riskier than driving a regular vehicle. With this point in mind, you should always be thinking about ways you can improve your riding abilities. Do you struggle with sharp turns? Do you feel uncomfortable riding at night? Step out of your comfort zone and practice until you feel more confident about your abilities.
