Motorcycle FAQs — Part I

Posted by RC Components on Jul 20th 2018

Riding a motorcycle is one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have. As avid riders ourselves, we know that there’s nothing quite like the feeling of the wind in your face as you ride on the open road. Becoming an experienced rider takes work, and in today’s post, we’ll answer some of the most common questions we receive about riding. When you’ve finished reading, head over to the RC Components website to shop our wide selection of custom motorcycle wheels, rims, and exhaust pipes!

Can I Use My Front Tire for the Rear?

No — tires designed specifically for the front or rear should always be used accordingly. Unlike cars, motorcycle tires cannot be rotated because they each have specific functions that pertain to your bike’s handling and overall performance. Your front tire, for instance, has a design that is slightly more optimized for steering, while your rear tire is flatter and is intended to provide you with extra stability. Changing the position of either tire will greatly compromise your safety, so never, under any circumstances, swap the positions of your tires!

Do I Really Need to Wear a Helmet?

Yes! In fact, the importance of wearing a helmet while you ride cannot be overstated. Several states do not have mandatory helmet laws, but a helmet should always be a non-negotiable element of your riding outfit. As we mentioned at the outset, riding a motorcycle is an exciting and heart-pumping activity, but it doesn’t come without risks. Too many motorcyclists suffer from fatal brain injuries while riding, and the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) notes that a high-quality helmet can reduce your risk of brain injury by 67 percent. When you’re looking for a helmet, be on the lookout for helmets that include a DOT sticker somewhere on the packaging — this is an indication that the helmet has either met or exceeded the safety standards set by the DOT. These helmets provide you with the best chance of walking away from an accident.
