The weather is beginning to become warmer by the day, and if you’re like us, then you’re probably looking forward to the hot days of summer where you can hit the road for a long ride on your bike. While the thought of simply taking off and heading for the open road is certainly appealing, you should take some time to prepare for your first long ride of the summer. In today’s post, we’ll provide you with a brief checklist to get you prepared for summer riding.

Summer Riding Checklist

Initial Check

It’s important to make sure that every component of your bike is working flawlessly before you hit the road, especially if you’ve been keeping your bike in storage all winter. We recommend taking your bike to your preferred shop for a basic tune-up. Have your electrical system inspected, your fluids changed, and make sure that your tires are still in good shape. You can never be sure if something has broken or become dislodged during storage, so it’s always a good idea to have a professional inspect your bike before you head out on your first ride.

Rainsuit

Depending on where you live, the weather may be dynamic and unpredictable. Certain states, like Colorado, have dramatic weather shifts during the summer, and the days can easily go from sunny to rainy in under an hour. It’s important to be prepared for potential weather shifts, so pack a rainsuit whenever you hit the road. In addition to protecting your leather gear from water damage, you won’t have to worry about riding in wet clothes, which can be a cold and uncomfortable experience! On a related note, it’s always wise to have a motorcycle cover with you as well. In the event that you have to pull off at a gas station or rest stop to ride out a storm, you can rest assured that your bike is protected from the elements.

Tools and First Aid Kit

You can never anticipate what you’ll need when you’re away from home, so it’s always a good idea to have a basic toolkit with you when riding. Pack a small bag with air pumps, a flashlight and extra batteries, hazard lights, a tire plug kit, and anything else that might help you if you need to make a small adjustment to your bike. You’ll also want to bring a first aid kit with you, as you can never know in advance if you or someone you encounter will need medical attention.
