Tips for Long Distance Trips

Jul 5th 2016

With Sturgis just a few weeks away, many people are starting to plan how they’ll get there. While many people drive and tow their bikes in a trailer, others opt to ride all the way from their homes to the rally. For many, this trip is the first long-distance ride they’ll tackle. What better way to break into motorcycle touring than journeying to the largest motorcycle rally in the country? While there’s no better way to reach Sturgis than on two wheels, long-distance rides can be challenging. We’ve put together a few tips to help new long-distance riders make the trip with minimal discomfort.

Pack the Right Gear

Since you’ll be on your bike the entire way, you’ll be exposed to a variety of weather conditions. From intense heat, to rain, to blustery winds, you’ll want to be prepared. Pack lightweight and breathable clothes for a base layer and add layers as needed. Sweatshirts, jackets, gloves, and rain gear should all make it into your pack so you can be prepared no matter the weather.

Focus on Comfort

Keep yourself comfortable. Pack sunscreen, lip balm, and lotion to combat the drying winds on your ride. No one likes the feeling of riding with cracked skin. Bring earplugs and don’t be afraid to use them while riding. At high speeds, the sound of the wind can be deafening and over time, increases fatigue. Using earplugs will help reduce road noise and can improve your focus and the quality of your ride.

Pack Only What You Need

While this will vary from person to person, there’s no reason to take everything you can think of. Remember, your bike can’t hold a lot of gear. Pack minimally and only take the essentials. If you start to run out of room in your saddlebags, consider leaving items that can be purchased at convenience stores as you need them.

Plan Your Route Ahead of Time

Before you leave, make sure you know what route you want to take. Make arrangements for hotels along the way so you’ll have clear destinations to reach each day. While unexpected side trips and detours can add an element of excitement to the road trip, knowing the main route ahead of time will reduce the likelihood of getting lost and can actually speed up your trip. Further, you’ll be able to research the route and familiarize yourself with any challenging road conditions or nearby tourist stops.

Don’t Forget Emergency Supplies

First aid kits and basic maintenance supplies will help you stay safe on the road. Remember, many highways, especially those following a scenic route rather than a direct route may not have as many gas stations or rest stops. It’s important to be prepared in case something happens in a place where help is a few hours away.
