Improving Your Bike's Fuel Efficiency — Part I

Posted by RC Components on Nov 13th 2018

Although most motorcycles tend to get good gas mileage, you don’t want to spend more than you have to at the pump. In today’s post, we’ll provide you with a few tips that can help you improve your bike’s fuel efficiency. Whether you’re simply looking for a way to save a bit of money in the long run or cut down on your carbon emissions, each of these tips is effective and easy to incorporate. When you’ve finished reading this post, head over to our website to view our extensive selection of custom chrome motorcycle wheelsexhaust pipes, and more!

Invest in Regular Maintenance

As we briefly noted in a previous post, one of the best ways to decrease your bike’s fuel consumption is to keep its internal components in pristine condition. Make sure that you’re taking your bike in for regular oil changes, and investing in high-grade oil is never a bad idea. You should also be sure that you’re changing your air filter frequently, as dust, dirt, and other debris can all hinder your bike’s performance. In fact, it’s been estimated that replacing your air filter can boost your fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent!

Drop Unnecessary Pounds

You bought your motorcycle because among other things, you like to ride on the open road at high speeds. You’ve probably bought custom chrome motorcycle wheels, saddlebags, and other upgrades for your bike that increase its functionality and aesthetic appeal. While it’s great to have a fully upgraded bike, you should always aim to travel with as little weight as possible. Those sturdy leather saddlebags you bought for a long-distance trip might look great next to your custom exhaust pipe, but they’re also weighing your bike down and compromising your fuel efficiency. Leave the extra weight at home whenever possible, but never sacrifice something that you could need in an emergency.

Buy High-Grade Fuel

It sounds incredibly counterintuitive, but investing in high-grade fuel can actually save you more money in the long run. Among other serious problems, low-quality fuel can clog your carburetor and actually lead to decreased efficiency. High-grade fuel has a higher initial price, but you’ll likely recoup the cost when you’re not having to invest in repairs.

While we’re on the topic of fuel, don’t top off your tank with extra fuel when the pump clicks. It’s a common habit you probably picked up from your parents, but it’s actually detrimental to the environment and your bike. Small spills are eventually washed into the grass and can make their way into the surrounding ecosystem. Moreover, gasoline needs room to expand in your tank, but filling it up past its capacity leaves almost no room for expansion.

Stay tuned for the second installment of this series, as we’ll be providing you with even more tips that can help you increase your fuel efficiency.
